CONSTRUCTING MODERN MASCULINITY IN THE TRAVEL WRITING OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY
This thesis was submitted in completion of the Georgetown University English Department undergraduate honors program on March 17, 2017. It examines the ways in which Ernest Hemingway uses the genre of travel writing in the 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises to construct and popularize a new understanding of American masculinity within the sociocultural context of the 1920s. It also explores how the novel’s influence on gendered values continues to be significant for modern-day readers.
